History of Food In Hawaii:
Food is one of the main thing that we need in our lives, but how did it end up coming to Hawaii. Well approximately 1500 years ago our Polynesian ancestors came upon our islands of Hawaii and decided to make it their home. Of all the time that they were at sea they were able to pack enough food now knowing how long they were going to be at sea for. But as they came upon Hawaii they had to build their everything that they would need in order to survive. As we have different systems these days like aquaponics they didn't have that, they had ahupua'as. It would consist of a section of land from the moutains to the middle land, out to the sea. With this system our ancestors were able to create enough food for themselves and more. They would have patches with halo and they would fish from the sea, plus the mountains would provide the water for their system. Our ancestors were able to provide for themselves for a long time until white people came upon our island in 1778. With them they brought disease and nothing good. In 1850 Hawaii became known for our pineapple and sugar cane. With the increase of demand we needed more workers so foreign people would come to Hawaii to work in the plantations. But in 1893 Hawaii was over thrown by the United States and that was when we lost our way of life. We didn't believe in living off the land anymore because we were being influenced by the Americans. By the 20th century we were living off of processed foods instead of food we could grow. And from their everything that our ancestors worked for was destroyed and we no longer live like them anymore. At least %90 of the food that is eaten in Hawaii is shipped here by boat of air. If anything had happened to the food that is coming to us would we be able to survive. Would we change our ways back to normal?

Cycles
Carbon Cycle
The carbon cycle is a process by which carbon compounds are interconverted in the environment. They are incorporating carbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis. It then returns to the atmosphere through respiration. And the rest of the left over carbon goes back up into the air. |
Oxygen Cycle
The oxygen cycle is the biogeochemical cycle of oxygen within its four main reservoirs: the atmosphere (air), the total content of biological matter within the biosphere (the global sum of all ecosystems), the hydrosphere (the combined mass of water found on, under, and over the surface of planet Earth), and the lithosphere/Earth's crust. |
Nitrogen Cycle
The nitrogen cycle is the biogeochemical cycle by which nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical forms as it circulates among atmosphere, terrestrial, and marine ecosystems. The conversion of nitrogen can be carried out through both biological and physical processes. |
My Groups Hydroponics System:
What is hydroponics you might ask. Well Hydroponics, by definition, is a method of growing plants in a water based, nutrient rich solution. Hydroponics does not use soil, instead the root system is supported using an inert medium such as perlite, rockwool, clay pellets, peat moss, or vermiculite. The basic premise behind hydroponics is to allow the plants roots to come in direct contact with the nutrient solution, while also having access to oxygen, which is essential for proper growth. In our class we have our own set up where we are growing lettuce seeds right now and they are sprouting very well. After those are harvested we are gonna put in new seeds and see if they are as productive as the lettuce. To feed our plants we use an artificial feed that is supposed to give the plants the nutrient that it need to grow. |
Food Journal:
Data Analysis:
From my data charts you can see that a lot of the food that I ate is not locally sourced, actually %93.3 of my food is not from here. I believe that is because most of the food that we buy in Hawaii is not even from here and to find products that are grown in Hawaii is hard to do and the local food cost more to buy.
|
Organic what might that mean you may ask. Organic means that at least %95 of the food that you are eating was not added with GMOS or any artificial ingredients. As you can see most of my food was not organic, only %2.2 of the food I ate was organic. To make organic food take much longer and makes the producer loose money by not selling.
|
Processed food is very popular now a days because it is easier and cheaper to make. Also it last a lot longer than not processed food. Processed food is the new thing like every food from McDonalds, Taco Bell and pretty much every fast food place. Also a lot of the foods that are sold in grocery store are processed. %93.3 of my food that I ate was processed. Im pretty sure our whole class had about the same numbers.

How Can We Make a Difference?
Food is something that our bodies need and if we keep on feeding it proceeded and not organic food then eventually our body is going to shut down faster. We should be putting good and nutritious food into our bodies. We need to re connect with our Hawaiian ancestors and recreate what they did before to where we can be sustainable. I know that is probably never gonna happen but we can make small steps at to where we grown and buy all of our produce on this island so that we don't need to ship it. We are so reliant on the main land and the food that they send to us that we don't realize that we have a whole island that we could make our own food on. Have you ever heard your parent say go in the back year and pick the vegetable for dinner or plant this seed so that we have food when it grows. No, instead they say I gotta go to times or Costco. We need to learn how to live on our own and be able to provide for ourselves so that if one day something happens and we aren't able to get food we will be prepared. I would say that all people in Hawaii who believe in this are allowed to have an area of the island to make a new place to plant food and become self reliant. Im not saying that they only have to live off the land but we need to find some way to stop being reliant of our outside food sources.
